Tax Filing Extensions
The deadline to file your 2022 individual income tax return is April 18th, 2023. If you are not able to submit your returns by that deadline, you will need to file Form 4868 to request an automatic extension of time to file.
You can print that Form 4868 and submit it by mail, but it must be postmarked by 4/18/2023. There are also a variety of services that will allow you to electronically submit your extension request for free. You can find more information on the IRS's website. You can choose any of the services listed on the IRS site to submit your extension. Extension requests must be submitted by April 18th, 2023. You will need to keep a copy of your extension request for your records.
The state of Kansas follows the federal extension, so no additional forms are required to request an extension of time to file your Kansas state tax return. If you are required to submit an individual income tax return for another state, you will need to review that state's requirements for extension requests.
Filing Form 4868 will extend your deadline to submit your tax return paperwork to October, 2023. This extension does NOT extend the deadline to pay any tax owed. If you owe tax, you will still need to make that payment by April 19th to avoid penalties and interest.
LSS is not able to answer questions about tax liability or other calculations related to any extension requests.
