Tax Filing Extensions

The deadline to file 2025 federal and state income tax returns is April 15, 2026.

If you are not able to complete your 2025 tax return by April 15th, you can apply for an automatic extension of time to file.

You can request an extension of time to file for both your federal and Kansas tax returns by completing and submitting Form 4868.

We recommend completing that process online. There are multiple software programs that will allow you to submit an extension request online for free. You can find a list and links to those programs on the IRS website

This extension extends your deadline to file your tax return paperwork to October 15th, 2026. This is an extension to file your return only; it does NOT extend the deadline to pay any tax owed. If you anticipate owing tax to the federal or state government, you will need to make a payment by April 15th to avoid penalties and interst.

Kansas follows the federal extension, so no additional forms are required to request an extension of time to file your Kansas return. If you are required to submit a tax return for another state, you will need to review that state's requirements for extension requests..

YOU MUST KEEP A COPY OF YOUR EXTENSION REQUEST FOR YOUR RECORDS.

You will have to include a copy of your extension request with your Kansas state tax return.

Extension requests must be submitted by April 15th.

If you are mailing a paper copy of Form 4868, that form must be postmarked on April 15th, meaning you will need to mail it from the post office to ensure it is stamped as received for mailing by April 15th. The post office closes at 5:00 pm. We recommend filing your extension request electronically and not by mail.

LSS is not able to answer questions about tax liability for purposes of filing an extension.

If you need to make a payment:

Payments to the Internal Revenue Service for federal tax owed can be made online at https://www.irs.gov/payments.
