You must be currently enrolled as a KU student at the Lawrence campus to be eligible for our legal services.
TAX FILING EXTENSION INFORMATION:
The deadline to file both federal and Kansas tax returns is Monday, May 17th. If you have not completed your federal and state tax returns, you may need to file form 4868 with the IRS to request an automatic extension to file. You can find more information about the extension process on the IRS’s website at https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/extension-of-time-to-file-your-tax-return. Filing form 4868 will give you until October 15th to file both your federal and Kansas tax returns. This extension gives you extra time to file your return but does NOT grant you any extension of time to pay your taxes. Any taxes due will still need to be paid by May 17th.
Unfortunately, LSS is not able to file extensions on behalf of students. If you need to file an extension, you will have to submit that paperwork on your own. LSS staff are working diligently to provide services to all members of our KU student community as the tax filing deadline and end of semester approach, but our staff’s schedules are very full. If you were unable to attend one of the 90 tax workshops that we held this spring but feel you may need additional assistance completing your 2020 tax return, you will need to file for an extension by May 17, 2021. Our office can then assist you with your tax return before the October 15th deadline. Please keep a copy of your extension form.
